Ashura, the biggest event of the Shi'ite Muslim calendar,
commemorates the death of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammad, in
the 7th century. The festival is celebrated for 30 – 45 minutes in the very
early morning with a few hundreds devotees at a mosque where men would be
dressed in white and walk on the strip of burning coals shouting prayers. Men
would also beat themselves with sharp blades in the act of mourning. There a
few countries where you can witness these festivals in which Myanmar is one along
with Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, and Pakistan.
