Travelling to Myanmar 101

Plan ahead

The popular, high season is November to February when the weather is warm but not stifling, and attracts the greatest number of visitors. This, in turn, makes the limited accommodation options tricky to secure and will mean trying to book ahead or face paying out for the more expensive options left over.

Travel in May before the monsoon season would arrive in June, and there really was a limited number of tourists, meaning you could walk into guesthouse and get a room without any problems. The only downside to this time of the year is that it is incredibly hot.

While a month of travelling is not possible for everyone, if you can make the most of your 28 day visa, do. This is not a country that be seen in a few days or a week, much like you can do the key highlights in the more easily navigable Cambodia and Vietnam. This is a huge country and travel times are long, plus it takes times to really get to grips with how things work here and understanding the people, the culture and the political climate. Spend at least two weeks here if you can.

Myanmar is ranking in the front page of some destination ranking lists and being a hot travel destination of South East Asia. Of course Myanmar is opening up to more visitors gradually, however there is still infrastructure issues. There are rooms to improve in terms of accessible currency exchange counters and ATMs, credit card acceptance, visa, flights and accommodations resulting Myanmar to be relatively expensive comparing to nearby south east
Asian countries such as Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Therefore, I personally urge people to plan your budget and travel arrangement e.g, buying tickets, a month before the travelling date. However, if you are planning to travel in December, and February ( during Chinese New Year), it is wiser to plan one and a half months advance to get in touch with travel agency in Myanmar to secure your flight tickets and accommodations.
That way you can assure that you are paying at right and reasonable price for a seat in safe flight and a clean nice room of your choice without any hassle instead of ending up paying more for something left over. It is also suggested to apply visa two weeks before the travelling date either at the embassy or online. (To apply visa via official government website please go to this
